Tips for Preparing for 11+ Maths Exams
For parents, this period can also be stressful, worrying or overwhelming, and supporting your child is important. We have a few tips that can help with encouraging home revision sessions and a good balance of work and play. Revision at home doesn’t need to feel like extra schoolwork. For KS2 children, keeping sessions short, positive and manageable can help make learning part of their routine without taking away from time to play and relax.
Keep Revision Sessions Short
Children can lose concentration if they are expected to work for long periods. Try shorter revision sessions with regular breaks rather than one long session. Even 20–30 minutes of focused practice can be useful.
Create a Simple Routine
Setting aside a regular time for revision can help children know what to expect. This could be after school, before dinner or at the weekend. Try to choose a time when your child is most alert and avoid revising feel like a punishment.
Mix Work with Play
Children need plenty of time to relax, play and enjoy their hobbies. Balance revision with outdoor activities, games, reading, family time and time with friends. A good balance can help children return to their work feeling refreshed.
Make Revision Interactive
Where possible, make learning fun. Use quick quizzes, spelling games, mental maths challenges or ask your child questions while you are out and about. Learning doesn’t always have to involve sitting at a desk.
Praise Effort, Not Just Results
Encourage your child by recognising the effort they are putting into their revision. If they make mistakes, use them as an opportunity to learn rather than something to worry about. Building confidence is just as important as getting every answer right.
Don’t Overdo It
More revision isn’t always better. If your child is becoming tired, frustrated or disengaged, it may be time for a break. KS2 children need time to switch off, and keeping revision positive can make it easier to maintain a consistent routine.
Make Time for Relaxation
Revision is only one part of preparing for exams. Make sure your child has enough time for sleep, exercise, hobbies and play. Helping children develop a healthy attitude towards learning can benefit them both during their exams and beyond.
